Not all of us are fortunate enough to have space to grow in full sun. Many people live in apartments with a balcony and limited sunshine. However, there is lots of food you can still grow in limited sun!
One of the most common questions I receive is “What should I grow first?”. Here’s what I tell people our strategy was in response.
Our favorite way to preserve basil is to freeze it into oil cubes to pull out all winter long! We also occasionally dry the basil leaves, but dried basil doesn’t quite retain the flavor of fresh leaves. By freezing basil into oil cubes, you can simply pull out a cube from the freezer whenever you need it and it makes it so simple and easy to add flavor to your food all winter long!
September is a great time to start growing food! We’re planting lots of things for fall and harvesting our summer crops!

We love using the Seeding Square to plant many of our seeds, especially beans and other plants that we plant very dense.

May is one of the best months for growing in Oklahoma.
Strawberries are one of our favorite things to grow! The sweetness and flavor in home-grown strawberries simply can’t be beaten! They’re easy to grow and will come back year after year and continue to spread. Strawberries are one of the few plants that we don’t even attempt to grow from seed. It takes up to three years for a plant to produce fruit, so it’s generally better to buy transplants from the nursery instead of starting from seed.
Tomatoes come with a lot of pest management. Beware of the tomato hornworm. He is a feisty fellow that can take out an entire tomato plant in a day!
