Customizing Frost Dates in the From Seed to Spoon App

The From Seed to Spoon app offers a feature that allows users to set custom frost dates, enhancing the gardening experience with tailored planting guidance.

The Seed to Spoon app is designed to make gardening easier by giving you personalized planting dates based on your local climate. We do this by automatically calculating your frost dates using historical data from the nearest weather station to your location—pulling from over 100 years of weather records. This means the app gives you planting windows tailored to your specific area, helping ensure your garden thrives.

However, we understand that microclimates, personal experience, or even urban heat islands can make a big difference. That’s why we’ve built in the ability for you to customize your frost dates if needed.

Why You Might Want to Change Your Frost Dates

While our default frost dates are great for most users, there are several reasons why you might want to make adjustments:

  • You live in an area with a microclimate that doesn’t match nearby historical data.

  • You’ve noticed your plants tend to do better when you plant a little earlier or later than our suggestions.

  • You use season extenders like cold frames, row covers, or greenhouses and want to adjust your planning accordingly.

Whatever your reason, changing your frost dates in the app is quick and simple!

How to Set Custom Frost Dates in the App

To use this feature:

  1. Open the Seed to Spoon app and tap the menu icon in the top left corner (three horizontal lines).

  2. Navigate to ‘Account’ and then select the ‘Location’ tab.

  3. Scroll down to the ‘Planting Date Calculations’ section.

  4. Tap on ‘Set Custom Frost Dates’.

  5. Adjust your last spring frost date and first fall frost date to match your local weather patterns or gardening preferences.

Once saved, the app will use your custom frost dates instead of the automatically calculated ones to determine planting windows. This allows for more accurate planning and better results based on your unique conditions.

Tip: Revisit Your Frost Dates Regularly

Gardening is as much an art as it is a science. If you try new techniques or notice changes in your local climate over time, revisit this setting to keep your planting recommendations as accurate as possible.

Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned gardener, Seed to Spoon is here to help you grow smarter. Custom frost dates are just one of the many ways we give you control over your garden’s success.
