Pomegranate is a berry shrub/small tree that produces fruit that contains small edible seeds. These seeds are incredibly healthy for you! Not only will they produce tasty and healthy fruit in the fall, but they will provide gorgeous bright-red flowers in the early summer! Pomegranates thrive in a warmer climate (zones 7-12), but it can be grown outside of these zones and is commonly grown in pots indoors or in greenhouses since it’s cold sensitive. This blog post will show you how how to grow pomegranate right in your own backyard if the climate is compatible or indoors if needed!

How to Grow:

Pomegranate shrubs/trees are best planted after your last spring frost or 8 weeks before your first fall frost. You can see specific dates for your location using our FREE iOS, Android, and Universal Web App.

Dig a hole about double the size of the pot that your pomegranate tree has come in. Give at least 15 feet between each tree. Be sure to plant where it will get full sun. Take care to notice what plants are around the area as well, see the companion plant section below. Water weekly. If you are in a cooler area where pomegranate will not survive outdoors, you can use a 10 gallon or larger smart pot as a tree bag to be able to transfer between indoors and outdoors as needed.

Companion Plants:

Companion planting is a vital part of organic gardening. Companion plants assist in the growth of others by attracting beneficial insects, repelling pests, or providing nutrients, shade, or support. There are also plants that do not like being next to each other. Some plants get too tall and can provide too much shade for your plant. Sometimes certain plants attract the same pests, so it is important to try and separate these. Herbs are especially great companion plants because they help to repel pests from your other plants!

Harvesting:

You can begin to harvest from your pomegranate tree after about 2-5 years. Pomegranate can be harvested as soon as they are ripe. You can tell that they are ripe once they reach their proper skin color and feel heavy. Cut these pomegranates off the shrub/tree leaving the stem with the fruit.

Cooking & Eating!

Pomegranates can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 6 months! You can preserve by freezing the pomegranate or making jellies or syrups. Pomegranates are commonly drank as a juice for their many health benefits.

  1. Although not one of the fruits grown in the orchards of the Santa Clara Valley, pomegranates were somewhat popular in home gardens. They happen to be one of my least favorite of fruit trees to work with because pruning is so unpleasant. They are very thorny, and when they get overgrown, are very difficult to renovate. It is best to prune them thoroughly and annually, so that they do not get too crowded.

  2. I have inherited my mom’s house which has a huge garden with many fruit trees, including a pomegranate tree.

How do you prune them thoroughly? Does that mean to trim off all the new growth on the branches? There are many suckers growing from the base of the trunk near the ground which I have been cutting periodically.

There are also some leaf footed bugs on the tree. Do you know the best way to get rid of them?

    Thank you.
